Novena to the Holy Spirit:  Ascension to Pentecost

The Novena (nine days of prayer) was established by Our Lord, Jesus Christ, and given to His Disciples following His Ascension into Heaven

 

 

Et convescens praecepit eis ab Hierosolymis ne discederent sed expectarent promissionem Patris quam audistis per os meum. 

Quia Iohannes quidem baptizavit aqua vos autem baptizabimini Spiritu Sancto non post multos hos dies. 

Igitur qui convenerant interrogabant eum dicentes Domine si in tempore hoc restitues regnum Israhel. 

Dixit autem eis non est vestrum nosse tempora vel momenta quae Pater posuit in sua potestate. 

Sed accipietis virtutem supervenientis Spiritus Sancti in vos et eritis mihi testes in Hierusalem et in omni

Iudaea et Samaria et usque ad ultimum terrae.

And eating together with them, he commanded them, that they should not depart from Jerusalem,

but should wait for the promise of the Father, which you have heard (saith he) by my mouth.

For John indeed baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost, not many days hence.

They therefore who were come together, asked him, saying: Lord, wilt thou at this time restore

again the kingdom to Israel? But he said to them: It is not for you to know the times or moments,

which the Father hath put in his own power: But you shall receive the power of the Holy Ghost

coming upon you, and you shall be witnesses unto me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and Samaria,

and even to the uttermost part of the earth.

VENI, Sancte Spiritus. Veniat unio Patris, beneplacitum Verbi. Tu, Spiritus veritatis, es praemium sanctorum, refrigerium animarum, lux tenebrarum, pauperum divitiae, amantium thesaurus, esurientium satietas, consolatio peregrinorum; tu denique ille es, in quo omnes thesauri continentur.

COME, O Holy Spirit. Let this pearl of the Father and delight of the Son come. O Spirit of truth, Thou art the reward of the saints, refreshment of souls, light in the darkness, riches of the poor, treasure of lovers, feeder of the hungry, and comfort of wayfarers; indeed Thou art the one in whom all treasures are contained.

Veni, qui descendens in Mariam fecisti, ut, carnem sumeret Verbum, atque in nobis operare per gratiam quod in illa es per gratiam naturamque operatus.

Come, Thou who came to Mary so the Word might become flesh and also work in us through grace as Thou worked in her through grace and nature.

Veni, qui es omnis castae cogitationis alimentum, fons omnis clementiae, omnis puritatis cumulus.

Come, Thou who art nourishment of every chaste thought, font of all mercy, and sum total of all purity.

Veni et in nobis absume quicquid impedit ne nos absumamur in te.

Tunc stabunt iusti in magna constantia adversus eos qui se angustaverunt et qui abstulerunt labores illorum.  Videntes turbabuntur timore horribili et mirabuntur in subitatione insperatae salutis.  Dicent inter se paenitentiam, agentes et per angustiam spiritus gementes:  Hi sunt quos habuimus aliquando in risu et in similitudine inproperii.  Nos insensati vitam illorum aestimabamus insaniam et finem illorum sine honore. quomodo conputati sunt inter filios Dei et inter sanctos sors illorum est.

HEART of Mary, Mother of GOD and our Mother, Heart most amiable, on which the adorable Trinity

ever gazes with complacency, worthy of all the veneration and tenderness of angels and of men; Heart

most like the Heart of JESUS, whose most perfect image thou art; Heart full of goodness, ever

compassionate towards our miseries; vouchsafe to thaw our icy hearts, that they may be wholly changed

to the likeness of the Heart of JESUS. Infuse into them the love of thy virtues, inflame them with that

blessed fire with which thou dost ever burn. In thee let the Holy Church find safe shelter; protect it and

be its sweet asylum, its tower of strength, impregnable against every inroad of its enemies. Be thou the

Cum esset ergo sero die illo una sabbatorum et fores essent clausae ubi erant discipuli propter metum Iudaeorum.  Venit Iesus et stetit in medio et dicit eis:  Pax vobis. Et hoc cum dixisset ostendit eis manus et latus.  Gavisi sunt ergo discipuli, viso Domino.

AT the intercession of St. Michael and the heavenly choir of the Dominations, may it please God to grant us grace to have dominion over our senses, and to correct our depraved passions. Amen.

At the intercession of St. Michael and the heavenly choir of the Powers, may it please God to vouchsafe to keep our souls from the wiles and temptations of the devil. Amen.

AT the intercession of St. Michael and the choir of the admirable celestial Virtues, may it please our Lord keep us from falling into temptations and deliver us from evil. Amen.

AT the intercession of St Michael and the heavenly choir of the Principalities, may it please God to fill our souls with the spirit of true and hearty obedience. Amen.

At the intercession of St. Michael and the heavenly choir of Archangels, may it please God to grant us the gift of perseverance in the faith and in all good works, that we may thereby be enabled to attain unto the glory of Paradise. Amen.

NINTH SALUTATION. Pater once, Ave thrice, to the Ninth Angelic Choir of Angels.

At the intercession of St. Michael and the heavenly choir of Angels, may God vouchsafe to grant that the Holy Angels may protect us during life, and after death may lead us into the everlasting glory of heaven. Amen.

In conclusion, say one Pater noster each in honor of St. Michael, St. Gabriel, St. Raphael,  our Angel Guardian. Then end with the following Antiphon:
